Unless you’re trying to make a point about how correlation has nothing to do with causation, these are pretty disingenuous and aren’t contributing much besides stirring people up.

Nothing new, is it? People in cities tend to vote more left wing while more rural areas tend to vote more right wing. That’s not even special to the US, I see it where I live as well. Education (better than income) is a good one as well; the better the education, the more likely they vote left wing.

I wonder if in 2007 there was a massive 20-person drowning event. I mean National Treasure was a pretty good movie but someone must have REALLY hated it.

I’m with Yamahog on this. “What? It’s just juxtaposition” is a pathetic excuse to hide behind. We have seen this kind of approach before . It’s not very effective.

If you’re going to make a claim like this, actually own it, and hopefully do a better job of proving a point than relying on your ability to google some maps. We’re an open community and will welcome interesting and/or stimulating conversation. This is not that, though.

If you’re just trying to rile people up while distancing yourself from your actions then take it someplace where fact-free analysis is welcomed.

Yeah, I would imagine drug overdose deaths would be significantly higher in rural areas with no access to immediate response from ambulatory service as well as nearby large hospitals.

I would think that among all the folks who comment regularly here, you would be one of the ones who would appreciate that meaningful discussion comes out of dissonance. Looking for good discussion is not the same thing as stirring poop. If I’d said, let’s say, “If you voted for Trump, then you are more likely to die of a drug overdose,” then I would surely earn your rebuke.

Having said that, if your expertise is such that you could cogently explain how correlation does not equal causation, then you could do us all a service by making the case.

It is a curiosity to me which posts on Oppo garner moderator attention and which do not.

I saw your response to Yamahog. I am aware that I can skip ahead to the next post, just as you skipped ahead of my explanation above and told me to take a hike.

I think these are largely Rorschach-like in that people will infer what they want to infer from the pair of images, and none of that is especially good given the current political climate. I won’t weigh in as the images say absolutely nothing about party affiliation and overdoses to me.

I’m just asking you to rethink this approach in presenting something so vague as a curious juxtaposition while offering no commentary of your own. The concern being that there’s no concrete suggestion of anything here, and that people will either glean from this:

1) “Hey! This says that people in ___ states are more likely to die of drug overdose! That’s not true robble robble robble!”

2) “LOL, look at the dumb people in ___ states, killing themselves with drugs! Figures they’d vote for ___, herpy derpy doo!”

I’m asking you to consider the implications. This has the potential to become inflammatory.

It is just as disingenuous as those who seek to correlate crime maps with electoral maps.

It’s also really easy to overlook posts/comments/etc that we’ve already taken action on when one isn’t directly involved, so there’s a bit of confirmation bias inherent whenever someone makes claims regarding mod activity.

That’s a good point. I did not think to read, “Some people were dicks and I had to delete their replies to your post” into what you initially wrote. Maybe the high quality of the responses owes to that. Schooled again.

What I considered writing was, “If I’ve crossed a line, feel free to delete my post(s), no hard feelings” but I did not want to come across the wrong way.

I have a lot of respect for this space. I remark to non-Oppo friends ALL THE TIME about what an excellent place it is. I’m as worried as anybody else about where our country is and trying to understand folks that do not look or sound or live — or vote — like I do.

Perhaps I should usher myself to the Cigar Lounge. Not sure if the good Oppos go there, though...

Kinja'd!!!2

Yeah it’s definitely not perfect. I think what you would find is that more rural areas that have high overdose deaths correlate pretty well with unemployment and/or large businesses/corporations moving out of the area (sawmills/coal mines/etc..)

First of all, thank you very much for the thoughtful reply. Much obliged.

Second, while I would expect to be labeled a dick for using No 2 above, next time, I will offer a comment of my own. If I had it all to do over, my comment would be this: “If I were to draw my own conclusion, it would be that the areas that carried Donald Trump are some of the most desperate parts of the country.”

I hope that while perhaps overly provocative at times, I do not strike the mods as being a dick. To me, there is a difference, thought at times, it can be subtle.

Oppo is excellent and I tell my non-Oppo friends that all the time.

Not only that, but I’m betting that the rural factor plays a lot more into drug overdoses than political affiliation.

Rural areas seem to make their own drugs, and Meth is a pretty big problem out in rural Nebraska.

Plus, the scale they use really breaks down on the county level. That darker pink square in the middle of Nebraska is Greeley county, population 2492. The 20 overdose deaths per 100,000 shown on the map is equal to .498 of a person in Greeley county. Either their map uses calculations that are more complex than what the legend and title shows, or they did used some inaccurate assumptions to get the rural counties to fit their data.

I would too. Although it’s not just despair, sometimes it’s due to taboos and lack of education (about the subject) as well.

Where do you get these maps?

Anyway, there are many types of demographical differences that have a similar distribution. I’m not even American, but it’s similar here. Just to name a few: Rural places with very few immigrants vote anti-immigrant. Conservative places have more teenage pregnancy and drug abuse.
